Before becoming a council-memeber, I served as a ward advisor for Ward 2. After being apart of this council for over a year and a half, I have grown a lot, along with other council-members and ward advisors. This year was really productive and we have accomplished many things since the beginning of the term. We have had many losses and additions but, at the end of the day, we are all still doing what we love, and that’s serving as a youth advocate and role model.

   I am a member of the Finance Committee and I have to say, there was a drastic change from last year’s committee to this year’s. Well, for starts, we got a new chair for the Finance Committee, which is Council-Member Terrell Bowditch, who I believe; set the tone for all future Finance Chair’s as far as what’s expected and how to uphold the position.

   When we were coming to the end of the term, the Finance Committee wanted to host an event, and we had originally agreed to host a silent auction, which was a good idea, but not the best decision at the time. We eventually realized that the silent auction just wasn’t going to work. I personally did not want the year to end without celebrating our success and we had very little time to decide what we were going to do so, we came up with the conclusion that we were going to have a “professional party-like” ceremony.

    We were all excited about the new idea and we all knew that there was going to have to be a lot of work and time invested in the development of the event. There great ideas coming from everyone on the Finance Committee and they were all great ideas, which were definitely implemented into the planning of the ceremony and the ceremony itself.

    After weeks of planning, the day of the ceremony was finally here. Everybody was excited and nervous but, we were eager to get started. There were many things that went wrong that day and there were many things that were not in place, before and during the event but, no matter what happened the event was still going to be a success. The team behind the whole event which consisted of the Finance Committee, Sarah Williams & Sean Gough (Our Bosses), as well as other council members, had been invincible. We were the ultimate team and we made sure that the event had been set up, to a certain extinct where if we had problems they wouldn’t affect the event and that’s how it went. We were all supportive of each other and we all worked together to make the event a success.

     My job at the ceremony was to oversee everything with Sarah as well as introduce the Mayor and I really enjoyed it. From the food spilling on the floor (which is what we promised the Sumner School that it wouldn’t happen) to myself introducing the Mayor and the relief and happiness of him getting a warm and happy welcome.

    After the ceremony, Sarah, Sean, and I stepped outside and we all talked about how to appreciative we were of each other and how the event would not have been a success without the hard work and dedication we invested into the event. So, to sum it up, this is by far one of the most successful events the DCYAC has hosted during the time in which I have been on the council and I am proud to say that I was a part of the event and the council.

-By Ryan Washington

The Problem with Youth in D.C

            In today’s society, there are plenty of problems that affect us today like war, recession, and politics. The main issue that troubles us the most is the youth in our city with no parental guidance. There are all kinds of trouble that youth become involved in such as drugs, gang violence and robberies. How do I know this? I have done my research by watching the news and reading periodicals, which young people are fighting and killing one another. Some reasons that youth behave in such a negative e manner include popularity, peer pressure and abandonment. When youth lack parental guidance, they sometimes miss out on having positive role models in their lives. We can fix this problem by trying to keep these kids in school and not on the street. We can try to reunite them with their family and fix whatever problem that is happening in the family. And if there are gangs that are causing loads of trouble in are communities they need to be handled by the police department and they most be disbanded before innocent people get hurt. The youth in today’s society are our future leaders. So we must do our best to make sure that they grow up in a safe and clean environment.

By Dominique Jordan

This Is Why I Am Here!!!

Before joining the District of Columbia Youth Advisor Council (DCYAC), I didn’t have any desire to address or change the issues in my community. I walked around with the attitude of if something didn’t directly affect me, then it didn’t concern me. However the DCYAC quickly fixed that. Since I became a member of the DCYAC, I have notice that all it takes is a few dedicated people—in our case, youth—to make a different in their community. I have participated in clothing drives, advocacy projects and even blood drive since I’ve been a member. This is a wonder program for those who have or want the ability to see a problem and not just complain about it, but fix it.

Kingman Island Community Service Project

In the DC Youth Advisory Council, I have participated in many activities, but the one that stuck out to me the most was the Kingman Island cleaning. The council, along with several other groups helped in the beautification of the Kingman Island clean up. We walked up and down along the Anacostia River picking up trash and recyclables.

My experience with participating in this community service was amazing. I felt like I really made a difference after cleaning. I think participating in this activity brought us closer together, we laughed and I even fell in the mud, but at the end of the day, we grow a closer bond. We even had a contest to see who could collect the most bottles by the time we were ready to leave. I recommend youth to participate in the DC Youth Advisory Council to everyone especially those who enjoy teamwork and want to make a difference in their community just as I did.

By Clarence Lee

Blood Drive

One of the best experiences that I had as a member of the DCYAC and the Health and Human services subcommittee was participating in the 2010 Blood Drive in conjunction with Washington Hospital Center and The Sidwell Friends School.

It was something g that I had never done before but I felt that it would be a nice way to give back to my community. I was a little nervous at first because people were telling me that I would lose a lot of blood and I was concerned about losing enough blood to the point where I would probably pass out!

When we arrived at the Sidwell Friends school I saw the amount of blood that they would be taking out of me, that’s when I really got nervous. When I sat in the chair, I saw the biggest needle that I had ever seen in my life. Now, I’m not afraid of needles or anything but that was a huge needle. When it went in my arm, blood shot out to my wrist. After that everything was perfectly fine. My favorite part was when I received all of the cookies and candy after I was finished giving blood. I felt good about myself knowing that I gave someone else a second chance at life.

By Anthony McCannon

Toy Drive at Blue Plains MPD

On Wednesday and Thursday, December 2nd and 3rd, we had additional volunteers to assist with sorting toys by gender and age from 10am – 5pm at the Metropolitan Police Academy 4665 Blue Plains Drive, SW 20032. M. Fenty. Fourty-six youth (32 council members and 14 Ward Advisors) representing Wards 1-8, the juvenile justice, and foster care systems took a pledge to advocate for youth in the District for a two year term. Those in attendance had an opportunity to learn more about the DCYAC, network, and have their pictures taken with Mayor Fenty. On behalf of the entire DCYAC staff, thank you to everyone who attended. From the swearing in and parade to the official Youth Ball, DCYAC members had a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness history in the making. Enjoy!

On January 20, 2009, I attended the inauguration parade. Since this year’s inauguration was a historical moment for African Americans, it was a wonderful experience. Despite the large crowds, the cold weather and difficulty in getting through security, I had a lot of fun. I got a chance to see President Obama get out his limo and walk down constitution Ave. with his wife Michelle Obama. I also got a chance to meet new people amongst the crowd in witnessing this experience. If you didn’t come out and celebrate this wonderful moment in history, it was your loss.

Tierra Glymph

11th Grade

School Without Walls Senior High School

On the night of the inauguration, I attended the first annual Peace Ball hosted by Busboys and Poets. The ball was a lot of fun and several important figures came to voice their appreciation for the newly elected president, Barack Obama. Everyone at the ball was at such a high energy from witnessing the life changing event a few hours before at the swearing in ceremony, and the ball lasted all the way untill 2 AM. However, my friends and I stayed till 12 that night because we had gotten tired since we had arrived to the ball at 5:30 that evening. We regretted leaving because just as we were exiting the postal museum, which was where the ball was held, Michael Franty and the Spearheads came on to sing. The band raised the intensity level severely and people began dancing and singing all over again as if the night had just begun. Overall, the ball was very exciting and was a perfect way to finish off the night after witnessing Obama officially becoming the next president of the United States.

Nina Shallal

11th Grade

School Without Walls Senior High School

DCYAC Feautured in the Washington Post: Essay Prize- Parade Seats for DC Kids

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2009/01/03/AR2009010301743_pf.html

Essay Prize: Parade Seats For D.C. Kids
By Nikita Stewart
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, January 4, 2009; C01

Some lucky and literary D.C. middle and high school students could write their own ticket to a front row seat at President-elect Barack Obama's inaugural parade.More than 100 students will be selected to sit in a viewing stand in front of the White House for the Jan. 20 parade based on the best 500-word essays that answer the question: "How can I contribute to my neighborhood through community service?"The students must be District residents who attend public or private school in the city, said Kevin Griffis, a spokesman for the inaugural committee.

The essays must be submitted by a parent or legal guardian who also resides in the District. Winners will be selected by the inaugural committee. They will receive three tickets, allowing them to bring two guests to the viewing stand next to one reserved for Obama and other dignitaries."This is prime real estate, I guess you could say," Griffis said.The Presidential Inaugural Committee wanted to emphasize Obama's commitment to community service and to the District, Griffis said. "It's . . . to say 'thank you' to the people of Washington," he said.Michelle Obama, wife of the president-elect, has said that she and her family want to be a part of the D.C. community just as they have been in Chicago.

Daughters Malia and Sasha start at Sidwell Friends School tomorrow.Parents and guardians may enter their children's essays at http://www.pic2009.org/dcstudentessay. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Jan. 11.Edward Doxen, 16, a junior at McKinley Technology High School, could barely contain his excitement yesterday. "How do I enter?" he asked. "When is the essay due?"Doxen, a member of the D.C. Youth Advisory Council, said Obama's gesture and the topic of giving back to neighborhoods were meaningful. "It's good that he's trying to touch base," he said. "I think it's a great opportunity. . . . A lot of us wouldn't get to go."The contest follows a trend of the inaugural committee's focus on youth and a literary approach to the event.There already is an online essay contest for writers of any age to pen something about what the inauguration means to them.

Ten winners will receive a package deal that includes airfare, lodging and tickets to an official ball, the parade and the swearing-in.The swearing-in will include a reading by poet and District native Elizabeth Alexander.The inaugural committee has also planned a free concert for young people at the Verizon Center on the eve of the inauguration. No word on how to get tickets.Tickets for other bleacher seats along the parade route on Pennsylvania Avenue may go on sale next week, Griffis said, although he had no details about how many will be available or how much they will cost.

In the past, ticket prices have ranged from $15 to $150.The National Park Service and inaugural committee are limited to building bleachers that can accommodate about 8,700 people, down from 20,000 in 2005 for President Bush's second inaugural parade, after a ruling by a federal judge.U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Friedman ruled in favor of the ANSWER Coalition, an antiwar group that argued that the seats turned the parade into a private affair. In 2005, spectators on the sidewalk complained that they could not see around the bleachers.

To apply for the essay contest visit: http://www.pic2009.org/page/s/dcstudentessay

Internships Pt.2

Hello, everyone, my name is Tierra Glymph and i'm here to give you guys some more information on internship programs for high school students in DC. Below are a list of internship programs looking for hard working students. I have given you some brief information about the programs to give you a feel for what you may apply for. PLEASE feel free to contact these programs or people looking for interns.

The High School Intern Program (HSIP)- is a mayoral initiative designed to promote leadership and development in high school students attending DC public high schools. and V, the restaurant was packed with a line of about 200 plus people outside the entrance doors. Waiters and waitresses were running in an out of the restaurant giving the people standing in line hot apple cider to help them cope with the cold weather and rain. Inside, there were even more people than there were outside. There were four TV’s located throughout the restaurant, at the bar, atop the bookstore, one facing the people outside, and one big TV in the Langston room. The chants when the polls notifying the people that Barack Obama was ahead were shown were deafening, and there was dancing and screaming and jumping occurring throughout the restaurant, even amongst the bystanders outside. Located at the entrance of Busboys was an Obamator which was used to count Obama’s electoral votes. By the time Barack Obama was announced the next president of the United States, the Obamator had overflowed. The cheers that broke out then were unbelievable. Everyone in the place had enormous smiles on their faces and everyone was hugging the person next to them. Obama’s victory truly brought the people in Busboys together. After the announcement of Obama’s victory, the police shut down <st1:street st="on"><st1:address st="on">U street</st1:address></st1:street> due to all of the commotion that was going on. There were people running around with American flags, people banging on drums or anything else they could find to make some kind of noise in celebration of the truly monumental event. The 2008 election will justly be a night that will go down in history.

DCYAC Kicks Off 2008-2009 Council!

Last week, the DC Youth Advisory Council (DCYAC) kicked off its first meeting of the 2008-2009 year. The new class is comprised of the most amazing young talent that the District of Columbia has to offer and we are confident that we are on our way to becoming the best youth council in the country.

The DCYAC consists of 32 council members, between the ages of 13 and 22, selected from various sectors of the District (3 members from each of the 8 wards and 8 at-large representatives who have experience with the Juvenile Justice System and Foster Care). Membership reflects a broad range of diversity encompassing, but not limited to, relevant differences such as ethnicity, location of residency, religion and gender. The Youth Advisory Council advises the Mayor, the District Council, DC public schools, other key decision makers in the District government, and other adult leaders in the District by:

* Commenting on legislation and policies that impact youth;
* Presenting methods to resolve youth-related conflicts between youth and between youth and adults;
* Proposing recommendations to improve the lives of youth;
* Monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of youth programs and policies;
* Partnering with neighborhood and youth organizations; and
* Providing youth with leadership development trainings.

Be sure to check out our blog regularly, because each month we will highlight a councilmember of the month.

DCYAC Registers Voters at the Columbia Heights Day Festival

Yesterday, the DCYAC participated in the Columbia Heights Day Festival and had the opportunity to register new voters. First, they participated in role plays and discussed the importance of the upcoming election. Finally, they hit the streets registering voters in the Shaw/Howard community. It was great to see so many people involved in the electoral process. DCYAC members will continue getting involved right up to election day, since many of them will be working as youth poll workers.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5251891327724280274" style="DISPLAY: block; It was such a great experience! We had teams of people working to put different sections of the playground equipment together. We assembled slides, a sandbox, swings, see-saw, and other playground equipment. We also put down concrete and mulch. The kids will have a lot of space to play hopscotch and other games. They also have equipment to play on as well as benches to sit and relax.

DCYAC at the DC Family Education Expo!

                                            DCYAC Program Assistant Julia Rogers recruiting
new members.

This past Saturday, DCYAC joined the Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) and dozens of other organizations at the DC Family Education Expo at McKinley Technical High School.

* Commenting on legislation and policies that impact youth;
* Presenting methods to resolve youth-related conflicts between youth and between youth and adults;
* Proposing recommendations to improve the lives of youth;
* Monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of youth programs and policies;
* Partnering with neighborhood and youth organizations; and
* Providing youth with leadership development trainings.

The DCYAC is a wonderful way for young people in the District to gain experience in community service, civic participation and youth advocacy. Throughout the year, DCYAC members will be able to meet and work with other District youth through numerous programs and collaborations. In the addition, DCYAC members will have the opportunity to travel to different cities and participate in national conferences and events. Please note that applicants must have been residents of the District of Columbia for at least one year. The application is available on our website at http://rrc.dc.gov/dcyac. Clink on the "Become A Member" link. The deadline for applications is Friday, October 3, 2008. Our day began bright and early at 8am at Fletcher-Johnson. Due to the low turnout, we headed over to Eastern Senior High School. There were a lot more volunteers and we were even greeted by the Eastern Band. We spent the day cleaning up litter, planting flowers, raking leaves, and cleaning up the area around the school. While we only worked for a few hours we helped make a big difference.
